Our Brides and Why We Love Them

Sunday, October 25th, 2009

We here at Adorn love all our blushing bride clients! That is why it’s always so great to hear back from them after the wedding! We often receive pictures showing us just how lovely they looked on their special day.

Here’s one of our latest favorites:  The Wedding of Susanna Slukhinsky. Susanna rented the Beckford Necklace and Susanna Slukhinsky Wedding-BeckfordDanielson earrings from Adorn recently and she looked positively beautiful in them. Just look at how that jewelry makes Susanna shine!

Below is an excerpt from the email she sent us:

“I received so many compliments on the jewelry throughout the night, and even I was amazed at how intricate the details were, and how seriously beautiful and unique these pieces were. Not only is the process easy, and the jewelry is gorgeous, but the service was spot on!!!!!!”

Susanna – you truly look like a princess and we are so happy to be apart of your wedding memories.  Thank you for your kind words and wonderful pictures. For more testimonials click here

A big ‘Thank You’ to all our brides! Please keep sending us your pictures! Your stories and experiences are why we love our jobs!

SWAC: Fighting Triple Negative Breast Cancer One Gloss at a Time

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

Last Friday Purple Lab hosted an intimate Breast Cancer Awareness event at NYC’s members-only Norwood club. The night was positively perfect; guests were treated to a scrumptious tea service (I love Harney and Sons tea – so classy!) and got to listen to Geralyn Lucas read passages from her amazing book: Why I Wore Lipstick: To My Mastectomy. It would be an understatement to say that Geralyn was inspiring. Her story is one that everyone should read and if you haven’t heard of it yet; go buy/borrow her book. Seriously.

SWAC Lipgloss

SWAC Lipgloss

Also, Purple Lab’s creatrix Karen Robinovitz presented one of the best products I’ve seen in years: SWAC (Sealed with a Cure) lip-gloss. Before I get into the amazing story behind this lip-gloss, lets’ talk about how great it feels to wear it. The lip-gloss goes on smooth and silky without being sticky. But don’t think its one of those non-sticky lipglosses that goes on like water and lasts about 20 minutes; this gloss stays on for hours. The color is a shimmering pale pink so you can literally wear it anytime, anywhere and it’s scented with a hint vanilla so it smells delicious. Now to the great back-story: a portion of the proceeds from each SWAC lip-gloss sold goes to the Triple Negative Breast Cancer Foundation. “The Triple Negative what?” you ask yourself? Yeah, I had no idea what it was before last week either. Turns out it’s an extremely aggressive form of cancer that affects younger woman. Sounds like something you should be aware of right? The lip-gloss color itself is named ‘Nancy’, in honor of Nancy Block-Zenna who lost her fight with triple negative breast cancer two and a half years after her diagnosis.

Thank you Karen Robinovitz for creating such a great product with such an important cause!

Obsessed with Celebrity Weddings?

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

Well it’s hard not to be! Flip through a magazine while getting groceries or turn on the TV and you get bombarded with celebrity stories! So why do we love our celeb weddings? Is it the glamour? The opulence? The sheer outlandishness? Who knows…

Here are 3 totally different celeb weddings from the past few months- which one’s your favorite??

Whats with Khloe's hair?

Whats with Khloe's hair?

First we’ll start with one of the most attention grabbing ‘celebrities’ out there: Khloe Kardashian. The Kardashians have had a big year: Kourtney is preggers, Kim’s on again off again with Reggie Bush, and now Khloe’s gotten married to someone shes dated for less than a month: Lamar Odom.  Wheew – I’d hate to be their parents.

The bride wore Vera (of course) and the theme of the night was ‘Hollywood Night Club’ – how refined.  The rooms were filled with white roses and the night ended with a performance from Babyface! I’m sure it was quite a party, even though the jury’s out on how long the wedding will actually last.

Alyssa Milano looks so pretty!

Alyssa Milano looks so pretty!

Next lets take a look at the Alyssa Milano-David Bugliari wedding. Alyssa and David took the traditional route: the two were wed in David’s New Jersey estate which was covered in cream colored rose petals and natural grass. The bride wore a custom gown by Vera Wang as she walked down the aisle to ‘Imagine’ by John Lennon.

The two newlyweds also passed around bowls of pasta to their 250+ guests as homage to their Italian roots. You stay classy Alyssa!

The ONLY pic I could find!

And Finally – everyone’s favorite Brooklyn BoBo couple: Maggie Gyllenhaal –Peter Sarsgaard. These two indie hipster love birds got hitched in at the Convento di Santa Maria di Costantinopoli, a luxury bed and breakfast in Brindisi, Italy. Not only were the press not invited, but the couple wed before just 40 close friends and family members. Talk about private!

Guests were served a delightful banquet with local Castel di Salve wines. So even broke the Vera mold by asking Dries van Noten to create her wedding dress (of which I CAN NOT find a picture – does anyone know where one is?). So chic Maggie!

Beautiful Wedding Gowns for Less!

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

Ok, how awesome is this idea: gives the world of weddings a way to connect buyers and sellers of new, sample and used designer wedding dresses. They’ve got over 3400 wedding dresses available to peruse in just about ANY price range (seriously – the dresses go from $100 to $10,000. Amazing).

Wanna sell your wedding dress? This place is your dream. Its way better than putting it up on Craigslist or Ebay or some other anonymous website because your listing doesn’t expire for 12 full months AND they filter the spam requests for you. I know a few of you are shaking your heads right now “Why would I want to sell my wedding dress?” Honey, I’ve had several friends buy 2, 3, even 4 wedding dresses before they walk down the aisle. Why? They made the mistake of CONTINUING to check out dresses after they bought one. Take a piece of advice from Adorn – once you have your wedding gown stop looking at dresses! It only leads to bigger bills.

Here are some glorious dresses (with some of our glorious gems to match) – bask in their lusciousness!

This simple yet elegant Melissa Sweet gown pairs beautifully with the Stevenson earrings and necklace. Class Act!

Not only is this Monique Lhuillier $1200 cheaper than retail value – its BRAND NEW! It looks amazing with the Budding earring and necklace set Monique-Lhuillier-Empire-PreOwnedBuddingNecklaceBuddingEarrings

How to Have a ‘Fun’ Wedding

Thursday, October 1st, 2009

Ever leave a wedding, turn to your date for the evening and say “Boy, that wedding as awful”? Yeah, me too. Nothing is worse than a boring wedding. Here are a few tips to keep the party poppin’.

Fearless Family Dancers? Check.

Crazy Family Dancers? Check.

Bring on the Dancers:
- Look at your wedding guest list. Anyone on there who you know loves to dance? C’mon, everyone’s got at least 1 cousin or friend who loves to boogie. They may not be good at it but they love to do it. All it takes is one or two crazy dancers to egg everyone else onto the dance floor…and don’t get those decoy fake guests who are really apart of the DJ crew to do it. That’s lame.

The Wedding is for you, the Reception is for everyone else

- I’m sorry brides, I speak only the truth. Try to remember you’ve got anywhere from 75-300 people coming over for dinner and they need to be entertained too. Have your friends send you music requests a few weeks in advance and ask the DJ to play a few of them – no matter how bizarre! The best impromptu dance-off at my wedding was to the ‘Goldfinger/Diamonds Are Forever’ James Bond remix. My best friend INSISTED I play it and I’m glad I did. The video is priceless.- Also, keep in mind the elderly and try to play a few songs for them. Granny Gertrude doesn’t dig techno.

Grooms Gone Wild

Grooms Gone Wild

Cut Loose (Footloose?)
Don’t take your reception so seriously brides because no one else is going too. A serious brides = total snooze-fest wedding. Dance crazy in your gown, laugh really loudly the entire night (you know, that obnoxious laugh you only let yourself do around your sister), let your friends Rick Roll you, and let you now husband change into a tuxedo t-shirt halfway through the party. People will think – nay KNOW – you’re awesome.

Don’t Force the Skit
- I leave this for last because this is possibly the most important. It seems like “funny” wedding videos are popping up on YouTube every 5 seconds.

Not everyone is comically inclined and we all didn’t go to High School at LaGuardia Arts (think of the movie ‘FAME’) so it’s ok if you don’t have a hilarious skit at your wedding. Nothing is more painful than watching someone attempt to be funny while they fall flat on their face. AWK-WARD!
