5 Steps to Your Perfect Favor

Monday, February 15th, 2010

Follow these steps to find the perfect favor for your event:

Step 1: All potential favors should fall into one of three categories. They should be either a Practical Keepsake, Favor Boxes/Containers, or they should be Edible. Rule out trinkets or dust collectors, and that tulle wrapped candy? So out!

Step 2: Does it or can it match your theme or at least your color scheme? Keeping everything flowing together will really make a difference in the overall effect. If the favor itself is not a perfect match you can still make it flow with colored ribbon, small gift bags, and labels/tags. It does not have to match immediately it just has to have the ability to match.

Step 3: Personalize It! It may cost a little extra (although some favors include personalization in their pricing) but it will be well worth it. The only exception to this is something that looks cheap. Don’t print white mailing labels with your name and date on them. The best ways to personalize cost effectively is to order tags, labels, or ribbon.

Step 4: Imagine your guests receiving the item. Are the guests at the right age to use and appreciate them? If you are throwing a girls night out for your weight loss group you may not want to get them cupcake mix. Or if the majority of your guest are traveling in don’t burden them with an edible favor that may not travel well. Also, consider getting the kids at the event a different favor than the adults.

Step 5: Order a sample. This is especially true for any large event such as a wedding or bat/bar mitzvah. Even if you have to order 12 favor boxes it is better that you know exactly what you are ordering before receiving 500 of them. Remember, favors are designed to be cost effective but that is not the same as cheap. Examples Practical Keepsakes: Pizza Cutter, Bookmarks, Photo Album, Coasters, etc. Edible Favors: Gourmet Oreos, Fortune Cookies, Cupcake Mix, etc. Favor Boxes/Containers: Personalized Glass Jars, Sweet Shoppe Boxes, Favor Tins Note: If you are going to go with an edible favor make sure it is incredibly delish. The memories of your wedding and edible favors may be forever linked.

Monday, February 1st, 2010

I’ve got a question for all of you: did you watch the recently aired Golden Globes for the fashions or for the awards (if you watched it at all)? If you’re like most of my friends, you watched the red carpet and didn’t even bother to watch the awards themselves and with good reason! Award shows can be boring but no one wants to miss the amazing fashion trends the stars give us. Here are two major trends we noticed while tuning in:

Cluster Earrings: ‘Big Love’ star Chloe Sevigny has always been known for her fashion impresario and was recently seen rockin’ diamond cluster earrings at the Globes. You can rent our Shaye Earrings for only $190!

The Honeymooners

Monday, November 16th, 2009

The Honeymoon, an amazing vacation that you and your husband plan together.  You can go anywhere, do anything, spend large sums of money and not feel incredibly guilty. Not only is it memorable because of where you are; it’s memorable because for the first time you and your guy are vacationing as husband and wife. Truly magnificent.

No matter where you go it’s going to be unforgettable, but sometimes the debate of where to go can start an argument between you and your beau.  Not sure where to go? Make a list of places you’ve always wanted to go to together and then look online to find out when’s the best time to go! Also, check websites like TripAdvisor for hotel reviews, sure some of them could be fake but odds are if a hotel has 290 EXCELLENT reviews out of 300, you’re going to have a good time.

Want some suggestions where to stay? Look into a few of these hotels/resorts – our staff swears by them!

Winter Wonderland: Coeur Des Alpes –  Zermatt, Switzerland

CouerdesAlpesLove to ski? Love the snow?  If you’re getting married during the winter/holiday season you may want to look into something super festive: like the Swiss Alps. One of our staff members honeymooned at the Coeur des Alpes and LOVED IT! Here’s why:

“ The night we arrived, we were greeted at the train station (at 9pm!) and escorted back to the hotel. They served us Prosecco and homemade apple cake by the lobby fireplace immediately so we could warm up (without asking) and brought our luggage to our room.  The penthouse room (shown above) was immaculate and had the most amazing view of the Matterhorn right from the bed. I’m not talking a slight view if you strained your neck, I’m talking full wall of windows looking straight into the mountains as you lie down relaxing. Gorgeous The staff was always amazingly nice and gave us wonderful suggestions where to go. If you go, get up and go to the free breakfast in the morning. I’m still dreaming of the quark mousse…in fact, I wish I was there now”

Island Getaway: Flor Blanca – Costa Rica

FlorBlancaLooking for that perfect beach oasis? Longing for privacy on your honeymoon?  Take a step out of the honeymoon beach box and try Costa Rica! One of our staff members stayed at the Flor Blanca and LOVED IT! Here’s why:

“The place is relatively small with 14 cabanas so everything is very personalized. Its quiet so if you’re looking for night life this is not the place to go. The Chef was amazing and we had access to private surfing lessons, a 3-hour private horse ride through a local ranch and on the beach at sunset. Sounds cheesy I know, but it was really great….not one of those hoaky rides where the horses go in a line and you have to wear a helmet. We definitely plan on going back. Interesting fact: Giselle Bunchen lives just up the road and often comes to the hotel to use their internet access. LOL!”

*Important Tip* Book early. The best places generally book up 6 months in advance.  For example, the Coeur des Alpes generally books up 10-12 months in advance so reserve early!

SWAC: Fighting Triple Negative Breast Cancer One Gloss at a Time

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

Last Friday Purple Lab hosted an intimate Breast Cancer Awareness event at NYC’s members-only Norwood club. The night was positively perfect; guests were treated to a scrumptious tea service (I love Harney and Sons tea – so classy!) and got to listen to Geralyn Lucas read passages from her amazing book: Why I Wore Lipstick: To My Mastectomy. It would be an understatement to say that Geralyn was inspiring. Her story is one that everyone should read and if you haven’t heard of it yet; go buy/borrow her book. Seriously.

SWAC Lipgloss

SWAC Lipgloss

Also, Purple Lab’s creatrix Karen Robinovitz presented one of the best products I’ve seen in years: SWAC (Sealed with a Cure) lip-gloss. Before I get into the amazing story behind this lip-gloss, lets’ talk about how great it feels to wear it. The lip-gloss goes on smooth and silky without being sticky. But don’t think its one of those non-sticky lipglosses that goes on like water and lasts about 20 minutes; this gloss stays on for hours. The color is a shimmering pale pink so you can literally wear it anytime, anywhere and it’s scented with a hint vanilla so it smells delicious. Now to the great back-story: a portion of the proceeds from each SWAC lip-gloss sold goes to the Triple Negative Breast Cancer Foundation. “The Triple Negative what?” you ask yourself? Yeah, I had no idea what it was before last week either. Turns out it’s an extremely aggressive form of cancer that affects younger woman. Sounds like something you should be aware of right? The lip-gloss color itself is named ‘Nancy’, in honor of Nancy Block-Zenna who lost her fight with triple negative breast cancer two and a half years after her diagnosis.

Thank you Karen Robinovitz for creating such a great product with such an important cause!

Beautiful Wedding Gowns for Less!

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

Ok, how awesome is this idea: PreOwnedWeddingDresses.com gives the world of weddings a way to connect buyers and sellers of new, sample and used designer wedding dresses. They’ve got over 3400 wedding dresses available to peruse in just about ANY price range (seriously – the dresses go from $100 to $10,000. Amazing).

Wanna sell your wedding dress? This place is your dream. Its way better than putting it up on Craigslist or Ebay or some other anonymous website because your listing doesn’t expire for 12 full months AND they filter the spam requests for you. I know a few of you are shaking your heads right now “Why would I want to sell my wedding dress?” Honey, I’ve had several friends buy 2, 3, even 4 wedding dresses before they walk down the aisle. Why? They made the mistake of CONTINUING to check out dresses after they bought one. Take a piece of advice from Adorn – once you have your wedding gown stop looking at dresses! It only leads to bigger bills.

Here are some glorious dresses (with some of our glorious gems to match) – bask in their lusciousness!

This simple yet elegant Melissa Sweet gown pairs beautifully with the Stevenson earrings and necklace. Class Act!

Not only is this Monique Lhuillier $1200 cheaper than retail value – its BRAND NEW! It looks amazing with the Budding earring and necklace set Monique-Lhuillier-Empire-PreOwnedBuddingNecklaceBuddingEarrings

Fall 2009 Wedding Jewelry Trends

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

Brides today tend to stray from the traditional by making sure all aspects of their wedding have hints of their own personal style. From the color combos to the music played to the choregraphed dance numbers, brides bring the flair and they bring it big. Your wedding jewelry is one of the best ways to show what kind of bride you want to be. Here are 4 hot trends for Fall 2009 – which one do you like you?

1.      Cuff BraceChadwickBraceletlets: Larger cuff bracelets are bold, daring, and adventurous. Todays’ bride isn’t a demure little flower – our ladies scream ‘Look at Me! I’m beautiful!’  Cuffs add vaa-vaa-voom to any bridal outfit. My favorite? Our Chadwick. LOOK AT IT IN ALL ITS GLORY!! I swear I’d wear it everyday if I could…

Beckford2.      Colors other than White: We all love diamonds and pearls but sometimes a girl needs a little something different. Colored gems and yellow diamonds are so hot right now. Channel your inner Lady Di and wear sapphires to your wedding. I’m serious – you will look positively stunning. Not sure you believe me? Come down to our style studio and try our Beckford on…you will fall in L.O.V.E

 3.      Old Hollywood:Classic old Hollywood glamour is all the rage. If you watched the Emmys this year you saw it everywhere (you know it’s hot if Heidi Klum is wearing it!).  But where to get this hot vintage look? Well – us! We’ve got a ton of pieces with some old Hollywood flare like these delicious Miles earrings

BuddingNecklace4.      Mother Nature: Flowers, butterflies, leaves, and rosettes are very popular this fall with wedding jewelry. Why? Maybe it’s because everyone has ‘going green’ on their minds or maybe its because those themes make us feel both feminine and girlie. Either way – it’s a great trend and we hope it stays.

Fun with Undergarments!

Wedding Lingerie Before and After the Wedding

Just how many stores did you go too to get your dress? A dozen? How long have you been debating about your hair style? 6 months? How long have you been thinking about what undies you’re going to wear? NEVER? Wait – what??! Listen up Girls because your before and after undergarments are serious business! Here are a few key points:

Before You Get Married:

The most important thing to remember about your wedding day bra and panties is COMFORT. Bridal boutiques may try to sell you decorative bras but remember you’ll be wearing these items for 5-6 hours. No one can ever smile properly when they have a bra wire popping out of their seam and stabbing your boob at every time you turn right.

Also, I know the last time girdles were in fashion your Grandma Rose was walking down the aisle but the new Spanx line of form fitting body shapers is top notch.  Figure out what kind you need on their ‘what body shaper for what wedding gown’ webpage. Do it! No matter what time period – fat rolls are never fashionable.

After You Get Married:

TulleVickySecretsThis is the fun part. There aren’t really rules for this category – it’s totally all about you and your style. If you’re a little ol’ fashion then you might choose to purchase a white satin babydoll like this tulle satin number from Vicky Secrets for about $58. It’s both sweet and sassy at the same time!

If you tend to be a little more adventurous then you might want to spend that extra cash on a saucy outfit from the daring and cheeky from Agent Provocateur. This super delicious red AgentProvocateurRedoutfit will cost you a little over 226 GBP (approx.  $368). Heck you could wear a replica of a WWII nurses outfit if that’s what makes you and your hubby happy…just make sure he’s into that as well.

IMPORTANT NOTE: buy an outfit that’s semi-weather appropriate. We all know you look great in metallic gold pasties but if you’re honeymooning in Switzerland and your cabin doesn’t have great heating…you may want to bring a long satin gown along as well.

The Trials and Tribs of Wedding Makeup

Friday, August 28th, 2009

Your dress is dazzling, your shoes are spectacular, your jewelry’s divine…but you still haven’t figured out what to do about your makeup?!

One of the biggest debates is should DIY your bridal makeup or pay someone else to apply it for you? On one hand you’ll be saving money but on the other…you may risk looking like a not so hot. (Frankly, either option has pitfalls.)

Let’s play the YES and NO game together to figure out what you should do. Remember girls: Answer Honestly!!

Yes: 1 point – No: 2 points

  1. I never leave the house without perfectly blended makeup!
Musical genius: perhaps. Award winning cosmetologist: not so much.

  1. My friends usually ask me for makeup application tips
Keep the free spirit. Lose the "panda" look.

  1. People often compliment me on my lipstick and eye-shadow color combination
At her age and status you can get away with a lot….but seriously? C’mon Betsy!

At her age and status you can get away with a lot….but seriously? C’mon Betsy!

4. My foundation and blush always look natural

Scored 4-5: Girl, you always look effortlessly glowing. People envy you for your stunning natural beauty (even though both of us know that complexion is anything but ‘natural’ – but don’t worry we know how to keep a secret)

Scored 6-8: Please do us all a favor and DO NOT do your own makeup.  You risk not only utter embarrassment but you may end up permanently featured on TackyWeddings.com

All jokes aside:  whether you’re doing your own makeup or not make sure you do several trial runs. Schedule ahead so you can get a late afternoon appointment and then you can go straight to meet your girlfriends for happy hour to get their opinions as well.

Pay attention to how it wears throughout the evening, and if you really want to give it a test….work yourself up into a good sobbing cry, then find over 100 people to hug you and kiss your cheek, then dance for 3 hours straight. If you still look presentable…you have a winner! Just kidding. But, do wear it for a few hours and check how it looks later in the evening.

Also, be sure to take pictures at each trial. This way you’ll know how well your colors/style photograph. Some foundations actually contain elements that refract light, which means that anytime someone snaps you with a flash you’ll end up looking like Casper the friendly bride.
