This Cake Costs A lot of Dough

April 5th, 2010

Wedding cakes tend to run the gamut from a DIY cake made by mom to a ridiculously large life-size portrait of the bride.  Although no two brides can agree on what the best wedding cake would be – everyone knows it’s an important part of the ceremony.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when while you’re ordering

Cakes Need to Be Transported:

Unless you’re a character on either Bewitched or Charmed, odds are you can’t make objects appear and reappear without having someone lift and move them.  Make sure you run through the transportation with your baker to make sure everyone’s on the same page about boxing, packing materials, and reception directions.  Professionals are usually really good about making this process work flawlessly. However, if your new mother-in-law decides to make the cake herself you should ask her to make it slightly smaller and designate at least 2 friends to help her with the transportation…the last thing you need is to arrive at the reception hall with a cake covered m-i-l. Not good, not good at all…

When Elaborate Goes Awry:

I have no words...

I have no words...

Please heed this warning: when it comes to wedding cakes STAY SIMPLE. Unless you’ve got boatloads of money on the best baker in your state – keep it simple. Complex cakes can sometimes go awry and totally put a damper on your special day. For example take the cake to the left. The idea was beautiful: dolphins playing on a cake. But the execution leaves a little something to be desired. Instead of being playful and happy, it looks like there’s been a massacre in Flippers family and everyone was invited to witness the aftermath.

Your cake should be something you both really love:  tasty, elegant, and beautiful. Don’t fuss, or freak out over it, or feel the need to go overboard. Sometimes a simple cake tastes the best and looks the prettiest.

Remember Your Guests:

You might want to have this elaborate cake but remember, your guests just want something delicious. It is possible to have both but keep in mind, it takes a very talented baker to do this. This might be obvious to some but do a tasting at the bakers with your future hubs. If they serve other baked goods, buy a few. Get one of their little cakes to bring to your mothers or his mothers or someones mothers. It’ll give you a good idea about the bakers normal level of product deliciousness (is that a real phrase? I don’t think so)

    Green Brides Rent Diamonds

    March 1st, 2010

The Green movement is everywhere, at the supermarket in new cleaning products, on the runway in organic and bamboo fashions, and even on our favorite television shows. According to Recycled Bride, the hottest green trend for 2010 is adding sustainable products and green friendly customs into your wedding day.

    Here are a few tips:

Buy Pre-Owned Wedding and Bridesmaids Dresses: Obtaining a pre-owned wedding dress is easier than it sounds. A lot of great websites deal in the ‘recycling’ of wedding dresses and WHY NOT? You always get a great deal, the dresses are beautiful, and you’re helping a fellow bride out. Who knows, maybe she bought the dress in a rush and then found her dream gown 3 months later (which totally happened to one of my good friends). If you’re looking for a good website to start looking, we love the gals at Encore Bridal. Check them out!

green-wedding-tipsPre-owned Wedding Decorations: I like this option because it’s not necessarily one that everyone thinks about. Its not like you’re reusing flowers and napkins, it’s the cake server you use only once, the large/colored candy dishes you need for the centerpieces, the Victorian themed wedding gift card box you wanted so much. You can look for these pre-owned items anywhere, but I recommend checking out Etsy.com, RecycledBride.com, or even asking anyone of your friends who’s gotten married lately if they have anything you could use. 24 hrs before my wedding I realized I didn’t have 1)a unity candle (it’s a Catholic thing), 2)a cake server, and 3)a case to hold the bubbles everyone used when my husband and I left the church. Thank goodness one of my bridesmaids tied the knot a month before and was able to dig up all of the above.

earringsRent Your Bridal Jewelry: This ones my favorite! Not only is it economical to rent Adorns gorgeous dazzling diamonds – it’s great for mother earth too. Renting genuine diamonds helps to reduce your carbon footprint. Don’t believe me? Just check the Green Bride Guide for their tips on creating a sustainable wedding by renting your dress and jewelry. There’s nothing I love more than being green and looking

If you love the idea of being a green bride and want to know more about how to expand on it – go check out Eco Chic Weddings. Its run by Emily Anderson – the author of the 2007 bestseller Eco Chic Wedding  – and has some of the best advice on how to create a wedding that’s sophisticated, stylish, and sustainable.

5 Steps to Your Perfect Favor

    February 15th, 2010

Follow these steps to find the perfect favor for your event:

Step 1: All potential favors should fall into one of three categories. They should be either a Practical Keepsake, Favor Boxes/Containers, or they should be Edible. Rule out trinkets or dust collectors, and that tulle wrapped candy? So out!

Step 2: Does it or can it match your theme or at least your color scheme? Keeping everything flowing together will really make a difference in the overall effect. If the favor itself is not a perfect match you can still make it flow with colored ribbon, small gift bags, and labels/tags. It does not have to match immediately it just has to have the ability to match.

Step 3: Personalize It! It may cost a little extra (although some favors include personalization in their pricing) but it will be well worth it. The only exception to this is something that looks cheap. Don’t print white mailing labels with your name and date on them. The best ways to personalize cost effectively is to order tags, labels, or ribbon.

Step 4: Imagine your guests receiving the item. Are the guests at the right age to use and appreciate them? If you are throwing a girls night out for your weight loss group you may not want to get them cupcake mix. Or if the majority of your guest are traveling in don’t burden them with an edible favor that may not travel well. Also, consider getting the kids at the event a different favor than the adults.

Step 5: Order a sample. This is especially true for any large event such as a wedding or bat/bar mitzvah. Even if you have to order 12 favor boxes it is better that you know exactly what you are ordering before receiving 500 of them. Remember, favors are designed to be cost effective but that is not the same as cheap. Examples Practical Keepsakes: Pizza Cutter, Bookmarks, Photo Album, Coasters, etc. Edible Favors: Gourmet Oreos, Fortune Cookies, Cupcake Mix, etc. Favor Boxes/Containers: Personalized Glass Jars, Sweet Shoppe Boxes, Favor Tins Note: If you are going to go with an edible favor make sure it is incredibly delish. The memories of your wedding and edible favors may be forever linked.

    The Perfect Honeymoon Lipstick

    February 10th, 2010

I’m pretty sure makeup is not high on your Honeymoon Checklist right now…but maybe it should be?? You want to pack light but don’t know what exactly you’ll need. Well have I got the perfect lipstick for you! Purple Labs new “Luvah” line is the ultimate honeymoon cosmetic. “Luvah” is enriched with aphrodisiacs (ME-OW), Complex OO (which is a double plumper that works immediately and over time), ylang-ylang, and a hint of a sinful vanilla/mint fragrance. “Aphrodisiac lipstick?” you ask, you better believe it.  What’s more ideal for your honeymoon?

The lipstick comes in a cute little compact with a stain on one side and a pearly gloss on the other. They are positively perfect by themselves but if you want a little extra oomph mix them. It’s the richest nude I’ve ever worn…like evah; and I’ve worn a ton of them! The brown undertones are so soft and the gloss so luxurious, you’ll be able to wear it day or night. In fact, I wore this ALL weekend: out to dinner on Friday, shopping and a party on Saturday, and at Stop N Shop on Sunday.

LuvahLipstickThere are only 2 shades in this lipstick category BUT they are super duper shades that any gal can wear: nude and berry. Not only do they come in two multi-purpose shades but Creatrix Karen Robinovitz named this new makeup tool after the two worst types of guys to date: Mama’s Boy (nude) and Rich Jerk (berry). Ha!! Karen you are hilarious and we here at Adorn just love you.

    Don’t Forget Your Groom

    February 5th, 2010

GuyChecklistThe whole process of getting married seems to be targeted towards the bride.  In fact, many of your friends and family will say to your soon-to-be husband “Let her do whatever she wants, its HER day”.  It’s great to be the center of attention during this hectic time in your life but what about your guy? He’s getting married too and needs just as much attention preppin’ for this big day as you do. The problem is that 95% of wedding websites are catered towards the female perspective so where should they go?

The Plunge helps your man with all his burning  – and maybe not so burning – questions. They have articles and blogs forumon just about every topic: getting engagement, getting married, ring buying guides, bachelor party guides (my personal favorite), honeymoon handbooks, and tons of checklists.  Its important to make your main man feel special during one of the biggest times in both your lives.

So send your groom-to-be The Plunges link today along with a suggestion for a night out this weekend with a promise of NO wedding talk. I’m sure he’ll appreciate it.
